RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT |
IN-HOUSE RESEARCH |
The Division carries out in-house project with specific objectives, especially in the downstream sector to develop new methods, generate trends of technical databank and build on capacities to meet up with future challenges posed by the industry. We are presently engaged in the following in-house research programs:
|
| ENERGY STUDIES |
Energy studies are as diverse as the name itself . This is a relatively new and an interdisciplinary subject area in the Division; its approach is team based, comprising of scientists, engineers, computer programmers, economists, social scientists, etc . It involves broad studies of energy extraction, transformation, generation, economic and environmental impacts of all stages in the energy process, renewable energy, energy efficiency, alternate fuels, pricing strategy, oil market forecasting and the economics and politics of energy etc. It will also play advisory role to NNPC and the federal government on energy matters from research findings and special studies. |
| COLLABORATIVE R&D |
R&D is on full gear to collaborate with reputable research outfits globally as a strategy to gravitate into the realm technology transfer. We are presently arranging to collaborate with the following organizations:
|
| Bioremediation Studies |
| Bioremediation is a means of cleaning up oil-polluted
environment by exploiting the diverse biodegradation ability of micro-organisms
to convert the hydrocarbon compound to harmless products by mineralization
and generation of carbon dioxide and water. It is a means of restoring
oil-polluted environment to its original status. Oil degradation is a
natural but slow process limited mainly by the supply of oxygen, nitrogen
and phosphorus. The collaborative research of NNPC R&D and ARATI Environmental Limited have developed environmental biotechnology bioremediation solutions for all weights of petroleum hydrocarbons, sites contaminated with solvents and other volatile organic compounds (such as trichloroethane, trichloroethene, benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes, commonly known BTEX) and fuels such as diesel or gasoline converts harmful petroleum products into carbon dioxide and water. After many years of research of advanced botany and microbiology techniques
with the noxious aquatic weed and microbes , an innovative material
that is very useful for environmental protection and management has
been developed. This is a powdery material produced from the weed and
impregnated with special strains of micro-organisms capable of breaking
down organic matter and biodegrading crude oil and various types of
hydrocarbons . This material was patented in Professor B. A.
Oso's name as OBD-Plus ® (Oso BioDegrader-Plus). OBD-Plus ® is
available in both powdery and liquid/suspension forms, a collaborative
research of NNPC R&D and ARATI. OBD-Plus® is
environmentally friendly, completely non-toxic and does not persist
in the environment. |
FELLOWSHIP PROGRAMS |
| We value exposure and symbiotic relationship with the scientific
communities worldwide as a strategy to acquire the technical know-how and know-why. The
fellowship program allows an individual or a group from the Division
to spent ample time with identified research outfit (through special
arrangement) to work on relevant subject areas to gain experience, new
knowledge and exposure to recent and relevant information. This strategy has helped other nations like India and Venezuela, etc to make relevant breakthrough in their quest to advance technologically. We are presently and continuously making arrangements with the multinationals operating in Nigeria to fulfill this program and that of the Federal Government's Nigerian Content participation policy in the oil and gas sector. |
